A big year means big lessons.
Phew. What a year.
2018 was a GIANT year. We've grown so much in 12 months, and like a baby (or Batman) we've stumbled and fallen and learnt to get back up again. The best mistakes are the ones make early and learn from. So here's a look back at some of the most significant nuggets of learning that last year granted us.
It sounds fluffy, but there's no time to try to be like everyone else. Everyone else can do that - we're doing our thing. It's so much easier to come to work when you're doing work you believe in. That's why we're loud and colourful and silly - that's just us. We believe in collaboration, doing ethical work, challenging ourselves and making stuff that makes people happy.
Look deep inside at your core values and give those to your business and share them with your team and shout it to your audience.
We specialise in comedy not just because we love it. We see a gap in the Brisbane video production market for comedy and we're sliding on in to fill that gap. The best bit is that we can't do it alone. We're finding more and more filmmakers, actors and writers who are fantastic at comedy - there's so much great talent in Brisbane. Our team is growing because working together is the best option for everyone. If you're in Brissy and love making comedy too, please reach out!
There's already companies out there that do everything (jack of all trades) so there's plenty of competition. Limit your scope to the one thing that only you can do and get REALLY great at it (not comedy in Brisbane - we've got that one). Becoming an expert means you can charge a premium - like the difference between a specialist doctor compared to a GP.
The story of the struggling artist sounds fun and all, but we're running a business. We've got all those things like overheads, wages, sub-contractors and rent to pay. Sure, we really enjoy filmmaking, but there is high value in our skills - not just in the services we provide, but the value that our services bring to our clients (think increased sales from video advertising). So yeah, we cost more than the other production company and we don't give discounts - because we're worth it.
So if you're starting a production company, make sure you value your services and charge accordingly. And get paid upfront (it only took us a client who owed three months of invoices then go under administration for us to figure that out)."If you're good at something never do it for free" - The Joker.
Rome wasn't built in a day, so all roads lead to it when you do as the Romans do (or something like that). Seriously, everything takes time. And the biggest payoff come after the most work. Carving our place in the Australian market isn't going to happen overnight - it never does - but we're slowly chipping away. Another relevant metaphor: A river cuts through rock, not because of its power, but because of its persistence.
Also, some decisions need time to mature. Sometimes the first idea isn't the best idea. Great ideas need time to gestate - to be worked, challenged, ripped apart and put back together. Doing it right means first thinking about it right.
With that said, there's no time like the present. Get started now, don't wait for permission. We all make excuses to do things later, so why not make an excuse to do it now?
This year, we have so much to do, so we're not waiting a second. We're only getting started...
